Andy Enright reportsYou wouldn't would you? I mean, look at the Suzuki SX4. It's not the sort of car you'd wilfully take off road. Despite having almost as much ground clearance as the Grand Vitara 4x4, the SX4 isn't really cut out for off road antics. Instead, think of it as a vehicle that's perfectly equipped for the sort of weather the unpredictable British climate likes to deal us once in a while.Part of my route to work involves a few miles of quiet country lanes that are almost perfect for putting a sports car through its paces. I recall being in a very powerful BMW once when I rounded a corner to find the entire road underwater. I had time to jump on the brakes and slow the car down and then pondered my options. Turning round and going the other way would have tacked another twenty minutes onto the journey and besides, the water didn't look that deep. Deciding that a tentative crawl through was the most judicious course of events saw me halfway through the flood, water approaching bumper level, when I spotted a Range Rover coming the other way. He wasn't slowing down much. As he entered the water, a bow wave bore down on me. I sat there in resignation, catching a glimpse of the other driver's face. His laughing face. I cursed his ability to plough through without worry. The ground clearance of the Suzuki SX4 gives its drivers a little of that insouciance but it also makes tackling obstacles like speed humps, car park kerbs and grassy tracks that little bit more stress free. At this point it's worth explaining that there are two distinct SX4 lines, priced from £10,515. GLX and 4GRIP models are distinctly SUV in appearance with alloy wheels, wheel arch extensions, side protection mouldings, side under protection mouldings and front and rear skid plates. The GL grade emphasises the passenger car characteristics with fewer SUV elements. The 4GRIP all-wheel drive variant has the intelligent 4wd system that's well worth the extra outlay. This added facet to the SX4's character makes it an intriguing proposition. The all-wheel drive system is similar to the Haldex system used in something like an Audi TT insofar as it diverts power from a slipping pair of front wheels towards the rear to restore grip, but Suzuki have given the driver plenty of control over how this system is marshalled. Most of the time, the SX4 is best left in a default economy mode where it functions as a conventional front wheel drive hatch. If the going suddenly gets really slippery, a lock mode ensures that front and rear axles are locked together to provide ultimate traction. A clutch system allows a small amount of slippage once under way and once you've reached 37mph, the system switches to its third mode, auto, which is the driver-selectable part-time 4wd mode."The SX4 is an intriguing and capable car but one which will, by its very nature, appeal to only a very select group of potential customers"Get your head underneath the SX4 and you'll realise that most of the vulnerable bits are tucked well out of the way, giving the all-wheel drive model a green lane capability that's far beyond what you'd at first expect. The front suspension is a conventional MacPherson strut setup while the rear end features a compact torsion beam arrangement, in this case sculpted to make way for the prop shaft and, if you opt for one of the Outdoor Line versions, the rear differential. Three engines are available to UK customers. The petrol engine is a 107bhp 1.6-litre but of more interest are the Fiat-sourced 120bhp 1.9-litre DDiS and the Peugeot-sourced 89bhp 1.6 DDiS diesels. The Fiat link is interesting and it would be understandable if you concluded that this tie-up was due to both companies' General Motors connection (Fiat tried to offload its car making arm to GM and the American giant has a 20 per cent stake in Suzuki) but Suzuki has a remit to control its strategic partnerships as it sees fit and there was a good `fit' with Fiat who could supply state of the art diesel engines and who needed a car of this type. Therefore Suzuki's Magyar plant in Hungary will turn out not only 40,000 SX4 models, but 20,000 Fiat Sedicis, a badge-engineered model that sports a different nose and interior detailing. It's certainly not a `proper' compact 4x4; the sort of car that goes head to head with the Nissan X-Trails and Land Rover Freelanders of this world. It's just too small for that sort of thing and the tale of the tape shows that the Suzuki measures about the same overall length as a Ford Focus. The interior packaging, however, isn't the most generous. There's certainly no shortage of room up front but rear seat legroom is rather stingy and the boot measures a modest 270 litres with the rear seats in place. Unless you drop the rear seats, you'll carry more in a Porsche Boxster. The rest of the interior news is pretty good. The fascia is well screwed together and attractively designed although materials quality looks a little way removed from the class best. Perhaps the best thing that can be said for it is that it's unthreatening and very intuitive. It is, perhaps, a little short on showroom wow actor. Suzuki have in the past brought us any number of interesting cars. Unfortunately interesting doesn't always translate to success in terms of sales and much as the SX4 intrigues, it's tough to see too many buyers seeing this car as the solution to their problems. The "SX 4" designation was used by American Motors (AMC) for a sporty liftback model in its all-wheel drive AMC Eagle passenger cars.[3] Although originally intended solely for the European market, the SX4 is sold in most of Suzuki's international markets. It was introduced at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show and is manufactured at the Magyar Suzuki plant in Esztergom, Hungary, Japan, and Manesar, India. An expected 60,000 units will be produced — 2/3 to be sold by Suzuki and 1/3 by Fiat, badged as the Sedici. SX4 Crossover is also sold in Indonesia since 2007. Earlier models were directly imported from Japan (Completely Built-up/CBU), however locally-assembled version were later introduced to meet the higher-than-expected market demand. Suzuki SX4 Suzuki SX4 hatchback (Europe) The SX4 was initially released as a five-door hatchback body style, marketed as the SX4 Crossover. With boot space of 300 litres (270 litres VDA]) and 60:40 split fold rear seats, they have a tumble/roll configuration that allows for an uninterrupted flat load area up to a maximum volume of 1,045 litres (625 litres VDA).[4] The Sedan model, marketed as the SX4 Sport, debuted at the 2007 New York Auto Show and has been released in Japan, India, and a few Eastern European markets. It replaced the Suzuki Aerio sedan and also the Daewoo-based Suzuki Forenza sedan and station wagon.[5] [edit] 2007 The North American-market model arrived in 2006 as a 2007 model year as Suzuki's entry-level AWD vehicle. Differences from the European model are the offering of AWD as standard (2WD Version available in Canada, Europe, Israel and China while AWD is optional in Canada) and a single 2.0 L J20B 143 hp (107 kW) inline-4 gasoline engine. [edit] 2009 The 2009 model year saw SX4 sedans with standard GPS navigation systems manufactured by Garmin with Bluetooth, weather, and a gas station locator.[7] The U.S.-market SX4 sedan (marketed as the SX4 Sport) is only available in front-wheel drive(FWD). Except for the absence of iAWD, the option packages for the SX4 Sport closely matched those available for the SX4 Crossover. Both the 1.6 litre FWD hatchback[8] and 1.6 litre FWD sedan models[9] which available in Israel (4-speed automatic only) and Malaysia, are fully imported from Japan. In Indonesia, only two-wheel drive version with 1.5-litre engine is offered. Both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the SX4 are available, although not all combinations of drivetrain and body style may be available in a given market (for instance, until the latter part of the 2008 model year, the U.S.-market SX4 Crossover was only available with iAWD). The AWD models use an electronically controlled iAWD 3-mode four wheel drive system, user-selectable between front wheel drive 2WD mode, automatic AWD AUTO mode, and AWD LOCK 50:50 split permanent AWD LOCK mode which can only be used up to 64 km/h (40 mph), after that it switches to AWD AUTO mode. 2010 Suzuki SX4 SportBack (US) [edit] 2010 For the 2010 model year, SX4 five-door hatchback is available with a 1.6-litre DOHC VVT petrol engine, 2.0-litre DOHC engine and 2.0 litre DDiS engine (16 valve, 135 PS (99 kW; 133 hp) & 320 N·m (240 lb·ft) torque) on the AWD version. The 1.6 litre DOHC VVT engine revised to the new CO2 emission control standards Euro 5 regulations. The engine gets also performance increase (from 107 to 120 bhp). (The US-market 2.0 litre engine from 143 to 150 bhp) and lower fuel consumption. The car is offered either a six-speed manual, 4-speed automatic transmission for 1.6 litre engine cars, or CVT automatic transmission with paddle shifters for 2.0 litre I4 engine cars. The 2010 model also gets front (ventilated) and rear (solid) disc brakes, 6 airbags (front, side and curtain), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), optional in 1.6 litre models. The 2010-model SX4 saw changes to the grille, taillights, instrument cluster, climate controls, and door trim, as well as a restructured cargo hold, and all-wheel-drive models add new rear skid plates. A new SportBack model offers a lowered sport-tuned suspension, body kit, rear spoiler, and also removes the roof rack found on the normal crossover SX4. The new vehicle, tentatively called the Rocktan, will likely retain Suzuki's all-wheel-drive system.[13] [edit] Motorsport Suzuki SX4 WRC at the 2008 Rallye Deutschland On February 28 at the Geneva Motor Show, Suzuki confirmed that the marque will enter the FIA World Rally Championship, with the factory backed Suzuki World Rally Team in the World Rally Car category in 2007, using the SX4. However due to WRC calendar changes Suzuki officially debuted in 2008, using the 2007 season as further development time for the SX4. The SX4 competed on a test basis in two 2007 WRC events: the Rallye de France in October 2007 (finishing 31st overall) and the Rally GB in November 2007 (finishing 27th overall).[14] In the first event of 2008, the Rallye Monte Carlo, Suzuki driver Per-Gunnar Andersson finished 8th. Suzuki has planned for the entry into 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans with a Le Mans Prototype based on SX4 platform, but has been cancelled. If it's not a pothole you have to negotiate, it's a pothill. And, on sensible wheels and tyres, the SX4 and the Nissan Qashqai have been particularly adept at negotiating them. No need for four wheel drive to run the suburban ridgeway. Just decent ground clearance and biggish tyres of at least 60 profile. But then, of course, if you live above the snowline for more than a few weeks of the year, you're going to want four-wheel drive as well, and in the SX4 and the Qashqai you can get it. If the original SX4 had a failing, it was under the bonnet. The old 1.6 engine just didn't cut the mustard. And, as part of the badge engineering deal with FIAT's Sedici, you couldn't get the 1.9 diesel engine in an SX4 with four-wheel drive. (Though this did later become available.) So sales were somewhat hampered to 15,500 over two years. Happily, though the 2010 Suzuki SX4 won't immediately be available with four-wheel drive and a diesel, it doesn't really need to be. As well as being quite rorty and sporty, its new chain-cam, close-coupled catalyser 1.6 VVT petrol engine can take you 45 miles on a gallon. And only stings you £125 a year tax, both first year and subsequent years. The character of this engine completely transforms the SX4 from a good car with a bad engine to a good car with a good engine. It's lively and fun to drive. Light to steer. Yet hangs on like mad round a greasy roundabout. It's also relatively inexpensive. Starting at £11,640, and rising to just £12,255 for the decently equipped ‘SZ4' two-wheel-drive I was driving, it's a lot of car for the money. A viable Qashqai competitor for around £3,750 less. Inside, you face a decent dashboard with chunky, easy to understand controls. The seats are comfortable. The steering wheel is height adjustable. The back seats are completely split 60/40, so they tumble-fold 60/40 as well, leaving an unobstructed floor. It's easy to get comfortable in the higher than normal driver's seat and visibility is good, aided by large quarterlights in the A pillars and big, van-like door mirrors. They've even improved the gearing, from a raucous 20mph per 1,000 rpm to a civilised 25mph per 1,000 in 5th. So 3,000rpm more or less gets you 75. The SX4's original ‘Cute and Chunky' looks weren't backed up by its old 1.6 engine. But they are by its new 1.6VVT. So I think the SX4 is going to make a lot more friends.
