The Cooper S has already proved itself to be the ultimate hot hatch (issue 935), and the Cooper sees off some talented opposition here. Both the Suzuki Swift Sport and Ford Fiesta ST are old-school hot hatches that are great to drive. The Fiesta is faster and has better steering and handling, but thanks to its more modern interior, value price and generous kit, the Swift sneaks ahead to take second spot.Yet the MINI moves the game on. Cleverly updated and beautifully detailed, the Cooper retains its unique charm, and adds a more compliant ride and better refinement. It's powered by a 1.6-litre VVT engine and while it's not the quickest, fastest or most powerful hot hatch on the market, it is one of the most fun to drive. Suzuki has tweaked the handling, given it larger alloys and added firmer suspension. There are also deeper bumpers, twin exhausts and a spoiler - as you'd expect from a sports model. Inside, it not only looks upmarket but you also get bucket seats, racy red trimming and plenty of standard equipment. All-in-all it's a tempting and cheaper alternative to the MINI Cooper and Ford Fiesta ST.
