The Suzuki Cappuccino is a small 2-door, 2-seater demountable hardtop roadster produced by Suzuki Motor Corporation. The vehicle was designed to meet Kei car specifications for lower tax and insurance in Japan. Weighing just 725 kg (1,598 lb), the Cappuccino is powered by a turbocharged, three-cylinder, 657cc DOHC engine (just under the 660cc maximum displacement allowed for a Kei car). Its dimensions also conformed to Kei car regulations on length and width, being 3,295 mm (129.7 in) long and 1,395 mm (54.9 in) wide. Front-rear weight distribution is claimed to be 50/50% when both seats are occupied. Layout is front mid-engined and rear-wheel drive. The hood, roof, roll bar and lower front guard panels are aluminium. Three removable roof panels mean that the car can be used as a closed coupé; T-top; targa; or, on retraction of the rear window and roll bar, a full convertible. Roof panels stow in the trunk (though it must be said that they will occupy 90 percent of the already modest space), and the rear window/rollcage assembly retracts into the body behind the seats. Unlike many convertibles of the time, the rear window is glass and wraparound, with demisting elements. It was originally equipped with the F6A engine: later models were fitted with a K6A engine which was lighter and had chain-driven, rather than belt-driven camshafts and more torque. Both are DOHC 12-valve, inline 3-cylinder engines that were turbocharged and intercooled. Power output was a claimed 63 hp (47 kW; 64 PS) @ 6500 rpm to fit under the maximum power allowed for Kei cars. The Cappuccino featured 4-wheel disc brakes, an early production iteration of speed-sensing electric power-assisted steering, aluminium double wishbone suspension and rear wheel drive. Production began in 1991 and ceased in 1997. The Cappuccino's closest competitor of the time were the Autozam AZ-1, Honda Beat and the Daihatsu Leeza Spyder. (The Autozam AZ-1, Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappuccino were together called the Sporty K-Car's ABC.) Suzuki intentionally designed the Cappuccino just for the Japanese market, meeting the tax needs of the Kei-class: body length less than 3.3 metres (129.9 in), body width not exceeding 1.4 metres (55.1 in) and engine size less than 0.66 litre. There was never any intention to export the Cappuccino. Production of the Cappuccino started in October 1991 at the Kosai Plant. The car had the designation SX306, and the model identification (incorporated in the VIN) EA11R. The sales launch of the Cappuccino was November 1991 in Japan, with the advertising theme: "fulfilling one's dream of owning a stylish and very affordable 2 seater sportscar". The first two years (1991–92) saw 15,113 cars produced and 13,318 (or 88% of production) sold in Japan. [edit] The UK (European) version In 1991 Suzuki GB opened discussions with Suzuki Motor Corporation about launching the car in the United Kingdom and meeting the needs of British National Type Approval. It took 18 months of negotiation and technical co-operation between SMC and SGB to get the Suzuki Cappuccino type approved and homologated. There were 23 adaptations to the Japanese Cappuccino to conform to British NTA, with the work done at the Kosai Plant and at the Suzuki Import Centre. In October 1992 the Cappuccino had its first public viewing outside Japan, at the British International Motor Show. At the show, the Cappuccino won two prestigious IBCAM Design awards: "best sportscar under £20,000" and "best car of the show". In October 1993 the Cappuccino was officially launched in the UK with a price of £11,995. Due to the car's initial success in Japan, and the tight import quota of Japanese products to the UK, the original allocation of 1,500 cars was cut to 1,182. Such limited quantities dictated a streamlined colour choice: red and silver in the ratio 80:20. Between 1993–95 a total of 1,110 cars were registered in the UK, with the balance was sold to other Suzuki distributors across Europe: Germany, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. [edit] The revised Cappuccino - EA21R In 1995 tougher emission controls were set by the European Commission, which led to the unsold cars being registered by 30 September 1995; any unregistered after that date would have had to be re-homologated. Discussions took place between SMC and Suzuki distributors in Europe to assess and "value" the necessary changes for the Cappuccino to meet these new emission levels. The corporate decision was made not to proceed with a revised European version due to the vast expense involved and lack of economy of scale due to the limited production run. The later specification (EA21R), introduced in 1995, had new, lighter engine with chain-driven camshafts, slightly increased torque, lighter wheels and an optional 3-speed automatic transmission with power steering. Both EA11R and EA21R (MT only) versions had optional "high specification" BA variants, which came with an airbag for the driver, ABS on all four wheels, a limited-slip differential and (in some cases) power-operated door mirrors. There were three limited editions of the EA11R, offering variations of colour and trim; the later two had power steering. With vehicle ownership a crippling financial proposition and average metropolitan traffic speeds slower than the tectonic plate the cities sit on, the Japanese have some tough breaks. The K-class of motor vehicles was designed to give the miserable Japanese motorist the opportunity to own a car that would merely render them destitute rather than eternally in the debt of the local yakuza boss. To conform, the cars in question needed to be less than 3. 3 metres long, less than 1.4 metres wide and with an engine size of less than one litre. These midget cars were not meant to be fun. Fortunately, nobody told Suzuki that last bit. Track down a decent used one and youll have landed yourself a tiny slice of Oriental exotica.Highlighting the fact that the Cappuccino is small may well be a Pope/Catholic or bears/woods sort of observation but its worth reiterating. This car is seriously diminutive. If youre broad of shoulder, Cappuccino driving can be rather intimate. The car is so low slung that it highlights a feeling that theres even less car than you at first envisaged. Although a drivers airbag and anti-lock brakes are standard equipment, some drivers may feel a touch vulnerable in such a tiny car. When the roof is stowed theres not too much luggage space. Standard equipment includes air conditioning and electric windows, but security provision is poor. Nevertheless, everything is impeccably built, the engine bay being a masterpiece in miniaturisation. If it didnt have a Suzuki badge on it, youd swear it was built by Sony.Prices for Cappuccinos start at around £1,200 for 1991 vintage grey import models. The first of the official cars tend to fetch around £2,000 whilst a late 1995 model year example will fetch the best part of £3,500. Later cars can retail for anything up to £5,000 especially in the increasingly collectible Type2 guise. As with most roadsters theres a tendency for the price to inflate slightly during spring and summer, and the rarity factor of the silver cars tends to add make them keenly sought after. Insurance is a surprisingly stinging Group 13, although some insurers may well ramp up quotes for greys.First things first. The Cappuccino is a target for villains so make sure that your prospective purchase has a Thatcham approved alarm/immobiliser fitted. If it doesnt, try to negotiate the value of one off the price. Official UK cars are worth around 5% more than equivalent vintage imports and they can be identified by their indicator light casings on the front wings. If the casing is flush with the wing its an import, if it bulges outwards its likely to be a UK car. Even the official UK cars were never supplied with any meaningful rustproofing, although a 6-year anti-perforation warranty acted as an emollient for many new buyers. Cars that have been undersealed or wax-oiled are a sure sign that the previous owner was fastidious in their care. Otherwise check for rust bubbles around the sills, wheel arches, doors, engine bay, and rear number plate recess. Make sure the rubber roof seals on the hard top arent perished, that the panels arent dented, that the rear disc brakes havent succumbed to metal moth and that the air conditioning is still up to par. British cars were trimmed in PVC which has proved to be agreeably hardwearing although most import cars will have some rather uninspiring cloth seats which havent stood the test of time quite so well. One advantage of buying what is developing into a cult car is that a dedicated community of enthusiasts can help with any problems or queries you may have. The Suzuki Cappuccino Register for Enthusiasts (SCORE) is an excellent resource and their website at www. score.org.uk is an invaluable source of advice, the club also being a handy way to land some discount at affiliated Suzuki dealers. Personally, the temptation to name the club SCARE would have been too great to resist(approx based on a 1994 Cappuccino). Prices can vary according to where you shop, but parts tend to be surprisingly reasonable given the limited volumes the Cappuccino sold in. Expect to pay around £52 for a pair of front discs and £45 for a pair of pads. A front wheel bearing will be just over £210 whilst a clutch kit is approximately £170. A rear shock absorber retails at around £95 whilst an alloy wheel will leave change from £180. A starter is in the region of £190 but should you need a new alternator, prepare to drain the current account of £480.The 64bhp three-cylinder engine epitomises the word willing, generating enough power and torque to give the Cappuccino surprising verve. Its possible to hit 60mph in a mere 8.2 seconds, and this will feel a good deal more dramatic than an equivalently quick family saloon! Top speed is pretty variable, with progress beyond 80mph an exercise in teeth gritting. A refined motorway cruiser the Cappuccino most definitely isnt but its enormous fun on back lanes. There you can take the roof down and enjoy every thrum, whiz, pop and hiss of the turbocharged and intercooled engine; a powerplant with a smaller capacity than your average bottle of Chablis. Fuel consumption is, as one would expect, superb the Suzuki capable of averaging around 43mpg. Its easy to be dismissive of the Cappuccinos abilities, to patronise it as a toy, but in the right conditions a well-driven example will show its pert rump to some far more serious tackle.The limited numbers that reached these shores, the critical acclaim and the sheer infectiousness of its personality make the Cappuccino difficult to resist. Whilst wed wouldnt contend with the view that its best enjoyed as a second or possibly even third car, if youve the yen for s bonsai slice of eccentricity, a used Cappuccino might be just your cup of tea.
